It is the queen of water plants and it is native to the areas of the big river basins of South America (Amazon, Paranà). Starting from 1956 it has found its natural habitat inside the hothouse of the Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto, where during the periods of greater vegetative activity, (June and July), the leaves can reach a diameter of almost two meter. Their striking flowers open up in the late afternoon with white pineapple scented petals and they close on the morning of the second day, to open up again towards the evening, this time in a pink version, which turns deep red during the night, while the pollination stage takes place. On the subsequent morning, they wither and plunge into the water letting the fruits ripen.
